Ilona Lay: Romantic Songs

Longing

LONGING

A grey day,
seemingly impenetrable
the shroud of the clouds.

But then,
all of a sudden,
a portal opens in the clouds
and you escape through space and time.

The pale canyons of houses
turn into blooming mountain valleys,
deep below you
life lazily meanders.

And you are a raven,
calmly spreading your wings
on your summit cross
and serenely sailing
over the waves of the mountain ridges
away into another land.

Autumn Song

Autumn Song

Bales of straw lie scattered
across the battlefield of life.
Ravens roam around in it,
pecking at the remnants of the year.

The wind, a ghostly executioner,
tugs at the meadow’s withered curls.
Chimneys unite their soaring prayers
with the winding figures of the fog.

But in your heart’s November night
forgotten shores appear on the horizon,
and on the ferry of the moon, you sail

into a land both near and far,
where fairies soothe you with their tales
and weave you a cocoon of clouds.

October by the Sea

October by the Sea

Between the dunes
the wind plucks at the paling blossoms.
The waves shriek like breaking ice
under the vagabond’s burning breath.

Restless white horses
rush abruptly through the quivering light.
Majestically the face of autumn
laughs from the dishevelled skies.

Rising from the depths of the surf,
a silent swan floats homeward.
And sometimes the celestial wings descend
as shadows into the longing sea.

November

November

November – your breath is rising
in the silky branches of the bushes,
and your desires shimmer
above the sail of the sea.

November – your thoughts are drifting
in the wordless song of the wind,
and your wishes shiver
on the dissolving path.

November – your robes are soaring
soothingly through the bleeding leaves.
And your prayers wind their way
in the mellowing glow of the moon.
